Always like a bit of digital taken into the real world... however I wonder, (a thought sparked off by the urban grime tune in the background), have they considered the gang land street divides? Wouldn't want to run through another gang's patch only to get shanked.

Someone asked me last night, whether or not I was going to get an iPad... and to be honest I hadn't given it much thought, sure they look great and there's a tonne of stuff you can do with them, they will be a paradigm shift for how we entertain ourselves, learn and communicate etc, but I got a fuck load of other things to spend my cash on at the moment... however after seeing this the answer is Yes, Yes, Yes!

Why is it that when you're waiting at a bus stop, nothing comes along for ages and along come 3... we've al heard/said this before. Well last night I saw no fewer that 17 buses... yes 17 buses, (albeit not all the same number)

This is bloody brilliant... attach an image, video, comment to any product that has a bar code on it for others to see and add to.

Now, the activist in me thinks that this would be a great way of bombing unethical products, alerting potential customers to the origins and production cycle of environmentally damaging items.

Or alternatively, the socialist in me would say that this would be a great way for the government to attach health ratings to food items for example.

Or even, the advertiser in me would attach freebies, branded content, details of provenance, etc to the product. Anything that would enhance a products appeal beyond what it's specific benefit/purpose is.

Be interesting... great article from Saatchi & Saatchi

http://www.thebookofrevelations.co.uk/2010/03/be-interesting.html
From art film, to TV ad, to music video

I know we've all seen this sort of thing before - Fischli and Weiss, Der Lauf Der Dinge (The Way Things Go) video 1987 and the Honda ad, in 2003 but this really has taken it up a level - the synchronisation of audio with the flow of events, not to mention the camera work and direction is brilliant...

Last night I was at the National Gallery Christmas party (and jolly nice it was too), I couldn't help notice that not all attendees were having such a great time...

I was at the National Gallery last night and saw this ice sculpture outside the main entrance on Trafalgar Square. The sculpture is in the shape of a polar bear and as it thaws it reveals the underlying skeleton of this endangered animal.

I think the sculpture, sponsored by the WWF and M&S, is a simple but very powerful way of getting the message across regarding climate change and global warming.

Really like this Nike 'campaign' that allows you upload an inspirational message and then sprays the message on the roads of the Tour De France. For me the charm of this idea is in the fact that the digital world is used to affect the real world.

I recently came across this video from Sour, for their track 'Hibi no neiro' - they have used the same technique as Mike Figgis did in Time Code. However they have used their own fans as the 'cast' and the whole thing has been cut from web cam movies... there's no dialogue or story as such, it's just a well executed visual feast... (persevere with it, it's a bit boring until 1.30 mins)

Monday, July 06, 2009

Last Tuesday I had the pleasure of attending a Q&A session with British director MIke Figgis, courtesy of Creative Social London.

Hosted at the Dare offices, we were originally meant to be spending the evening with Art Malik, who unfortunately couldn't make it along. In his place, thanks to some swift string pulling by , Mike Figgis agreed to come instead - and what a treat it was.

Mike talked of the highs and lows of trying to get ideas through, especially in the money oriented world of Hollywood. He talked of how he battled his ideas through in the face of mediocrity, the enemies he made in being so adamant about his vision, but ultimately the quality of the final product when he did stick to his guns.

He also talked in detail of his film Time Code. Originally conceived as a personal creative project, the film took on bigger proportions when a chance meeting with a major studio gave access to a large budget. Time Code was simultaneously shot on four cameras. Four actors were given their scripts on a musical score and then had to, in isolation of each other, act out their respective pieces. The film was shot in real time so that once the cameras started to role the they didn't tope until the end of the movie.

It really is a masterpiece... here's the trailer

Charming, honest and humble, there’s nothing like a bit of hand drawn typography … I saw this sign in a local dry cleaners… be sure to look closely at the spelling of some items…

More on the Nostalgia thoughts...

In these dark economic times, thinking about the future is a fairly daunting prospect. So with this in mind it has been interesting to see that many household brands are using nostalgia and a fondness for the good ol’ days to sell their products…

Most people think banners are boring and/or just get in the way... this is a truly imaginative and fun way of making use of the really restrictive window sizes we have to work with... streaming live bands into banner spaces but what's really cool is that they have got the bands to perform in boxes that are of the same dimensions of the banner...

Turner prize winner Jeremy Deller, is driving this burnt out shell of a car round America. The mangled wreckage is lasting evidence of an attack in Bagdhad in 2007, where 35 people were killed and more injured. The resulting conversations of passers by being put on Youtube.

I like the way that this 'piece' evokes intrigue at first, then horror when the context is revealed, finally conversation... but what is really interesting is that Deller filmed the conversations and stuck them on Youtube thus extending and amplifying the piece to make something much bigger.

Now that I know what Twitter is, here's a way in which a brand has made simple use of it...

http://skittles.com/chatter.htm

Seems like everyone's going Twitter mad at the moment... Initially set up as a means to communicate with friends and family, inevitably users have taken it on and made it their own.... here's a brief introduction by founder Evan Williams.

Play the Album Cover Game

1 - Go to "wikipedia." Hit “random... Read More”
or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 - Go to "Random quotations"
or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 - Go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven days”
or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4 - Use photoshop or similar to put it all together.

Here's mine... a bit freaky!

Ever since I was at college, years (and years) ago I always thought - 'wouldn't it be great to have a camera mounted inside my eyeball?'

I was always interested in the capture of fleeting moments and always felt that my photos at the time seemed a bit contrived. With my 'camera eye' I could secretly take momentary shots that would capture glanced images without the hassle of reaching inside my bag, pulling out my camera, turning it on, setting the apeture, focussing, and finally snapping the moment... which of course had long gone...

Now it seems that someone has done it!

That's Life - Stuffed Cat!

After being confronted with a load of stuffed animals at Spitalfield Market today - I remembered this classic from TV show 'That's Life'

Walking around Spitalfields Market today, I couldn't help but notice how many stuffed animals were there... both macabre and strangely compelling... I was left pondering, is this an example of man's desire to 'own' nature?

Like many, I suppose, I gave little wry smile when I saw this on TV recently - however, upon reflection, I think that what this person says is actually quite honest and illustrates the point of just how outdated the traditional boundaries of the 'British class system' have become.

This week's power play... heavy dubstep... good for losing yourself in your headphones and getting work done

Doing some research for a new brief just recently (I was looking for some images of 'chintzy' gold taps, gold baths and other examples of decorative bad taste, for a villainous character I was creating)... I found this image from Saddam's palace... Apparently, this painting depicts a series of scuds launched towards Jerusalem. Saddam would sit in front of this mural and entertain guests! Now, I'm no psychologist but... something tells me this guy was not of a fun loving, easy going disposition.

GSK Contemporary at the Royal Academy is showing this installation by T.V. Santhosh called Counting Down - a series of fibreglass dogs (wish they were made of solid stainless steel), with timers around their necks and a running LED ticker showing quotes from Yoshitaka Kawamoto, a survivor of the bombing of Hiroshima.

I found this piece really impactful - maybe its that the dogs look like T1000 androids, (from Terminator 2), and that there are many of them repeated in a squad formation, poised, waiting... waiting for what, I don't know? Maybe until the timers run to zero and they all come to life savaging anyone that happens to be there at the time?.... It's like the frozen moments before the apocalypse kicks off.

Death Penalty Map

Found this map today and was shocked and appalled at how many countries still use the death penalty.... Aesthetically, I also found it interesting that information graphics (maps, diagrams etc.) by nature are quite passive and non-expressive - the message is serious and aggressive yet the map is visually placid and nonpolitical - I found this juxtaposition quite compelling.

Thursday, October 16, 2008

I think this is quite interesting as an idea - Doritos allow you to remove all the unwanted banner ads on a web page and replace them with images you like.... although, the replaced images are subtly branded so in effect it's still an ad!

Having just become a father I guess I am sensitive to all things 'baby' at the moment... research has shown that babies respond to high contrast images - this book, Art for Baby, features work by artists that include Damien Hirst, Julian Opie and Bridget Riley. Certainly my daughter has a fixation with my girlfriend's zebra print dressing gown!... so at first glance I would agree with the theory... I'm going to get a copy when it's released on 2nd October...
